There’s been a lot of broohaha and something about rihanna in all of this. With your expressed permission I will engage in extreme projection and tell you exactly what Nivea was thinking.
The Nivea AD people came up with a very clever AD campaign with several different color models as one would do. They aired it. People got pissed that it had racial implications. Nivea realized the subconscious attitudes that led them to title the black model as uncivilized, while referring to the white model as someone who went off on a bender in Vegas. Horrified at their internalized racism, they took it down immediately and apologized. That’s my rosy view of the situation and i am sticking to it.
Look there has been a long sorted history of labeling people of color as uncivilized or primal or some other fill in the blank. And [projecting again] what you are seeing is the tail end of this sort of thing. It is no longer deliberate, but it is still in our subconscious, which is in part what this friggin blog is about.
Those of you who can’t tell what the problem is, you don’t know the history or your more racist than you think. Those of you who say it’s cornell west STFU.
A more intriguing issue is the mainstream attitude of what is or isn’t civilized in terms of men with long hair or beards (because those are unprofessional) Everything in modern day society is skewed towards altering your natural state, which makes a little sense for grooming [Except for covering up normal body scents flowers or some kind of a musk & extreme body augmentation] with but not very good sense for anything else see: the natural environment or our food but those are other stories.
Please remember that this all boils down to wether or not they can make money and Nivea had sense enough to know they on this one they failed, but there are still plenty of people who actively make money on representing people in whatever way they see makes the most $$$$.
Let’s get one thing straight. I am strongly in favor of this movement. To those females who say oh so condescendingly ”you’re not helping ladies” you cunts are wrong. WHY? Simple accountability.
Fact is I can be standing right in front of you ass naked and you don’t have any right to even look at me sideways. Is being ass nekked the best idea, well believe it or not their our entire societies where people walk around in the buff, they don’t seem to be losing their shit over it.
Look everyone knows to stay out of sticky situations but rape is the only fucked up situation where people go: What the fuck was you wearing, where the fuck was you at, why the hell didn’t you ass call me? (and maybe katt williams stand up)
Firstly, I gotta say I’m a grown ass woman, the buddy system is for children. And unsafe situations but if the whole godamn world is unsafe for over half (count us) the population??? i think we have bigger issues to deal with. It all boils down to the same logic. Whatever the hell i’m doing minding my own fucking bizness ain’t got shit to do with your behavior. There are lots of signs like that in all the slutwalking events. Recently hitting South Africa, where rape is actually a friggin epidemic. The walk boasted a solid 2,000. Some of which were men, some of which were wearing mini skirts in solidarity. [Needless to say they are the coolest fucking men on EARTH].
Some of my favorite signs so far include:
My little black dress does not mean yes
variations of “Stop slut shaming”
"no means no" = classic
Ask me what I am asking for [ftw]
If my clothes were asking for it why wasn’t i?
or “if my clothes were asking for it why couldn’t you?”
don’t tell me how to dress/tell men not to rape
this skirt is not an excuse for rape
NOT asking for it
silence is not consent
taking “slut” back
Slutwalking: Starting out in Toronto in response to one of many reports of government officials/ judges/police officials particularly a Constable Michael Sanguinetti who said at a York University safety forum, “women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized”.
Now a discerning human being might draw a parallel between what the good constable said and burka’s in the so called backwards countries we go off to bomb. No? The message is the same. W
omen are to dress in a certain way to prevent men from losing their shit.
No 1 : if i was a guy i’d be insulted that people are assuming I can’t either keep it in my pants or to have to find an unwilling participant.
The question is of course - well i’m not sure of Andrea Gibson is for or against this movement but i defer to her as someone who said it best “what your gonna teach your son?" [seriously fucking check out that link NOW- you will thank me for it]
That is the question
the concern is on the “victim” of the crime about what to do to prevent such atrocities from happening to them instead of how do we stop people from committing these crimes. That is the main stream attitude. That is the perception that is perpetrated by the media.
No 2 UNDERSTAND
RAPE is not a female problem. WE are not raping anyone, we don’t have the fucking problem YOU DO. This is a MALE problem, based on societal perceptions of what a female is i.e. property. so it is inherently a representation problem, that is causing men to lose their damn minds.
fucked up sign
The day females are seen as people first, rape/sexual assault (and domestic violence) will be like murder -
when people get really pissed off and lose their head or
when there’s some elaborate revenge scheme,
Hmmm that’s still a lot. Well we’ll get to that too i promise
for rape it’s like this
Globally, at least one in three women and girls is beaten or sexually abused in her lifetime. (UN Commission on the Status of Women, 2/28/00)
I don’t think 1 in 3 guys get murdered or assaulted.
Do we have to say: NOT COOL.
What we should say is that it starts with perception. So watch how you talk about, think about, what music you listen to regarding our vagina citizens and see how you perception of them changes.
Extra Credit: For guys or gals. You listen to main stream rap? Don’t for a month, switch to indie and see how your attitude toward women changes. Not even by increasing positive perception but by removing negative. Think rap sucks ass [well you probably have only ever heard main stream] but whatever, put down the magazines. Same time limit. Ready? Set? Grow!
