Yesterday on TYT
reliablely horrific on many social issues Cenk Uygur of the The Young Turks manages to get in a key point in a passing comment he makes
in a brief segment TYT more or less agreed that the three now infamous teenagers who happened to Instagram their heinous Halloween costume are little shits but *shurg* what are you going to do. Steve Oh assures us that he doesn’t care and they can do whatever they want. [Thanks Steve]
While black folk everywhere screamed.
The whole of TYT is generally in agreement that ‘ya know free speech, so what are you going to do?’. Everyone seems to until the last three seconds when Cenk states
"Yea, until they stand their ground, then it becomes a problem"
100% accurate reaction gif:
And so Cenk clarifies the link between the devaluing of black bodies to the epidemic of race based shootings.
If a youth getting gunned down is so funny you make a costume out of it. The chance that you value a black life is about zero.
If you’ve never heard my position, allow me to restate. Freedom of speech/expression is absolute and guaranteed.
The mission statement here is to expose and clear and thick between the media rhetoric that functions to dehumanize and degrade minoritized bodies and why we
We are people.
Depiction is a reflection of an internalized value system.
bravo Cenk, i’m so fucking proud
In a piece that contains the telling (even in context) line “I am a racist,” longtime Washington Post columnist Richard Cohen employed a mishmash of poorly explained statistics and bafflingly ignorant mathematical reasoning to argue that Trayvon Martin was “understandably suspected because he was black” — that is, Americans should assume any young black men […]
for representation for the humanity of us right now I have hope
the timely release of fruitvale station in the midst of the zimmerman trial gives me HOPE
this is (
an) the opportunity to explain to people that young black boys are actually people
not monsters, not labor, not a waste but people
i cannot express in real terms how positive it is that so many people are hyped into that media circus of a trial
we never gotten that much attention about this before
ay - i’m late for things ya’ll
Season 6 Episode 2 makes plain what True Blood has been hinting at for years. Combining the historical evils of homophobia and racism and projecting all of that horror onto all of the supernatural characters.
The show is now and out and out civil rights fight, with political players, government sponsored terrorism, a proposal for VRA and activists in a not so subtle statement that LGBT rights is the civil rights issue of our time and race is still the issue of our time.
I could’t be happier that the show has come back round full circle to it’s political leanings with a vengeance. Can I say that I am also stoked that jurnee smollett bell is an atavist from Oakland, coming down from the north to fight for the civil rights of supernatural folk.
Here’s a question. Did I miss/forget something? What happened to La la’s magic?
Am I the only one still hoping that baby girl is a shifter and she just has never shifted into anything but a wolf yet?
It also appears to be business as usual for Tara, as she keeps getting the awful end of everything.
Now i’m probably just fooling myself here, that even though I feel that Tara (as well as Lafayette) is the punching bag for the show. It is almost beginning to look as if the vampires who pretend not to give a shit about her have done more for her than Sookie or any of her other friends who say that they love her. I’m probably imagining it though.
Grandpa fairy has fangs and fey magic, what’s up with that? Ben could totally be Warlow.
Sam is so perfect as a blue collar turned civil rights hero that it is almost cliche. He even has a rule in his bar about not talking politics.
Shame on the hippie activists for recording that whole thing though. How would they be able to use that? How?
Jurnee has brought the black people in Louisiana count up to 3 and the human count up to 4.
Granny wolf has already explained that the V didn’t cause the last pack leader to lose his mind the power of the position did and now once sweet Alcide done fucked up.
I really liked in the religious end to this show, so far all of the god related plots on the show have been horrible and in a deeply religious state, It’s improbable for all of their experiences to be so negative. Nobody on the show goes to church- ever? It’s like what?
Here’s hoping we find more fairies and they don’t kill them all off in a really contrived and non nonsensical way like last time.
So the last what three of four big stories going around have been
These all have the exact same underlying thread of cultural bias. So as much as is
saddens me pisses me off, kills me that they occurred. The fact that they occurred at the same time has allowed some people to connect the dots.
These preconceived notions that we have in our head are just that, preconceived. Before they come near us they were fabricated and sold to us by the main stream media, who are either
lazy and would go with a convenient story,
greedy, and would alter the facts to fit into some narrative to sell more shit
culpable, and put good people in bad places for their own ends
They no longer concern themselves with the truth, only on what makes them money, and keeps them in position. They will happily paint, poor, black, differently abled, and [insert non-normative behavioral aspect here] any way they chose and have you take it as truth. Normally no ones care but now you can clearly see the consequences of such actions, Namely, people’s lives.
Representation matters. These are not tragedies, there are people who must be held responsible, they are in your TV’s, your magazines, your radio’s, your billboards, your computers they sell you wars over seas and conflict in your neighborhoods. They are the media conglomerate run by old rich cis-white males who don’t give a damn about how what they produce effects everybody else- or even other cis-white males for that matter. They do this for money and position, without regard for others. They are not your friends. Turn them off, don’t buy them off the shelves, tune in to independent sources who are accountable to the people. We are all affected, we are all people.
OK OK OK this is in reference to the Trayvon Martin case in which everyone agrees that the kid was shot because he was black or looked suspicious
what I and some others are trying to argue is that he looked suspicious cause he was black and there are people out there with a vested interest in equating the two. This is problematic in average everyday life as it can result in for example not getting hired for a job// in this extreme cause the perpetuation of the “scary black man” mythos gets a child murdered.
So the question is not. Whether or not Zimmy here is a an actual i hate black people racist but how can we address the structural racism that exists within our society that infiltrates our mind and mostly causes people to want to shoot us.
I have already posted this clip a lot earlier but i think it is the perfect example and HOPEFULLY should explicate how such mythos function in our society whether the individual has personal hate feelings or is just crazy paranoid
Did we get all that? This idea of the scary black man operates in our society even in other black men yea??? K, good. And it is perpetuated by the media. It has REAL CONSEQUENCES people die or get held back in school, or never get that job, or just generally walk around mentally unsound internally hating themselves on some level. This is how oppression operates. This is how representation dictates our interactions with other human beings. This is why we are here. This is also and awesome fucking sketch.
where is the cell phone
new witnesses come forward teenager on the phone moments before the event
show all the angry black people in church
GOD there is everything wrong with this coverage
his family is mad? imagine that
they did not mention zimmermans previous record of violence just that he is a neighborhood watchman
did not mention the boys relative size and age to zimmerman
"that’s justice to you" OM FG
i can’t even
this is FUCKING FUCK
very well written though even in this article the boy is given agency in “attracting attention” of zimmerman instead of vice versa zimmerman THOUGHT the guy was suspicious trayvon never did anything to ATTRACT attention
